Our Communities

Welcome to the Iñupiat Community of the Arctic Slope (ICAS), the northernmost tribal entity in the United States. We are proud to call this vast and breathtaking region our home.

Our Land

Our borough stretches across approximately 94,000 square miles of northern Alaska, north of the Arctic Circle. Imagine a land of dramatic contrasts, where the sun shines at midnight in the summer and disappears below the horizon for months in the winter. From the Chukchi Sea to the Canadian border, our territory encompasses a diverse landscape of mountains, tundra, and coastline.

Eight Vibrant Communities

Nearly 10,000 Iñupiat people call ICAS home. We are spread across eight unique communities:

  • Anaktuvuk Pass: Nestled in the Brooks Range, this community is known for its rich cultural traditions and stunning scenery.
  • Atqasuk: Located on the North Slope, Atqasuk offers a blend of modern amenities and traditional Iñupiat values.
  • Kaktovik: Situated near the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Kaktovik is a gateway to incredible wildlife viewing opportunities.
  • Nuiqsut: This community on the Colville River is known for its strong connection to subsistence practices.
  • Point Hope: Perched on a peninsula overlooking the Chukchi Sea, Point Hope boasts a rich whaling heritage.
  • Point Lay: This coastal community offers a tranquil setting and access to abundant marine resources.
  • Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow): As the northernmost city in the United States and the administrative center of ICAS, Utqiagvik is a hub of activity and cultural exchange.
  • Wainwright: Located on the coast, Wainwright is known for its strong sense of community and traditional arts.

Utqiaġvik serves as the base for ICAS, providing essential services and support to all our communities.

We invite you to explore our website and learn more about the unique culture, history, and people of each community.
