ICAS – ICE Cellar Thermosyphon Project Form

In an effort to assist communities with food security, ICAS will be working on ice cellar thermosyphon test projects across the Arctic Slope. We plan to work with willing participants to outfit existing traditional ice cellars or “Sigluaq” with thermosyphon technology to help keep cellars frozen. If you or your family is interested in participating in this project, please fill out this form and turn it into the ICAS main office, 6986 Ahmaogak St., or by mail, P.O. Box 934, Barrow, AK 99723, or by email Martina.Hopson@icas-nsn.gov

This form is available via PDF on our website icas-nsn.gov and also available for pick up at our main office. Submitting this form is not a guarantee you or your family’s ice cellar will be outfitted with thermosyphons as there are many factors to consider.

We will need to evaluate the site and will require landowner consent. We may ask for pictures or conduct a site visit before a decision is made to ensure practicality. Participants who are selected will need to sign additional waivers, permits and other documentation may be required. Projects will be considered based on various factors including ease of accessibility.

Installation of these thermosyphons requires heavy equipment drill access, which may require wintertime installation. Each individual ice cellar thermosyphon project must meet local, state and federal permitting stipulations before construction can be considered. This project has limited funding, however, if these test sites prove the concept, we will work to ensure additional funding sought to expand the project to include more ice cellars. If you or your family’s ice cellar is selected for this first round, you will receive a letter in the mail or a phone call confirming the decision. This project is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) from the US Treasury. ICAS will also be coordinating with communities regarding walk-in freezer needs.
